Wilson Elementary School teacher Christina Fuentes reacts after discovering that she and her fourth-grade team received a $1,000 donation from the Stone Gate HOA Adopt a School program. Stone Gate HOA Vice President Robert Partin delivered the check to Fuentes on March 6.
March 6, 2015—The Stone Gate Home Owners Association (HOA) and developer Land Tejas awarded Wilson Elementary School teacher Christina Fuentes and her fourth-grade team with a $1,000 check during a surprise presentation at the school on March 6.
Through its SG Adopt a School program, the Stone Gate HOA partnered with Land Tejas to donate the funds to the grade level or team of a CFISD Spotlight Teacher. The district partners selected 2014 Spotlight Teacher Christina Fuentes and the Wilson fourth-grade team through a random drawing.
“It feels good to give back to the schools, because we know that the teachers sacrifice a lot of their own time and resources to help their students,” said Robert Partin, Stone Gate HOA vice president. “This reaction from Christina and her team makes it all worthwhile. We will continue to do this as long as I sit on the HOA board."
Donna Guthrie, assistant superintendent of elementary administration, was in attendance at Wilson’s faculty meeting when the unexpected donation was made. Fuentes said she was pleasantly surprised by the gesture.
“I was excited, shocked and speechless,” she said. “We work hard for the children to get them where they need to be educationally. To receive rewards like this from the community makes us want to work even harder.”
Fuentes, who is in her eighth year at Wilson, said she and her team will likely use the $1,000 to purchase some type of new technology to enhance learning for the students.
“Technology is what they all do on their personal time, so if we can connect to them in a way that they are already familiar with, the learning will come along naturally,” Fuentes said. “I’m excited to share this with my fourth-grade team, because we are really all in this together.”
Wilson Principal Pam Link said it felt rewarding to see educators honored for their servant leadership.
“It’s so nice when people in the community recognize what they do and the importance of their jobs,” Link said. “They invest a lot of time and effort in our students, and this gift will only continue to help their future.”
